Maenads are the female counterparts of Dionysus (Bacchus). Whereas Satyrs were also companions of Dionysus and assumed beast-like appearances, the Maenads have no need for metamorphosis.

To resist Dionysus is to deny the irrational in yourself, and repression is destructive. To have awareness of one's nature and one's place in nature is wisdom. The Maenads exhibited the human joy and fulfillment mixed with the recognition of the tragic condition of man.
